Reviewed by Berniece Rabe for Writing for DOLLARS!
Robyn Conley is a skilled book doctor. But she says its possible for
you to be your own book doctor. Since you have two sides to your brain,
one side can create and the other can edit, once you learn the skills. She says
to switch from being the creator, to being the doctor, you have to give yourself
permission to switch, then leave a little time to ease out of one mode and into
the other, and that reading aloud helps you become objective.
Once you make this switch, all you need is editing skills.
This book is a gift, for it is compact schooling, stated simply and precisely,
on how to totally edit your book and what things to ponder.
When you dont feel quite right, you go for help from a skilled person
who knows what to look for, and also has a method of fixing things so you can
function well. First off, your temperature, blood pressure, breathing, weight,
and posture are checked. Likewise, with a book that isnt working, Robyn
Conleys check list of common things are presented first, along with methods
which will assist the book in communicating well. Characters, plot, style, point
of view, flashbacks, grammar, and dialogue are checked.
Once the common ailments are considered, the broader scope of the total person
or book are considered. As certain illnesses are classified, so she describes
the elements of different genres, but states originality is given its pathway,
as well.
Your health doctor says, Take a vacation, exercise and eat right and
you should have no problem. Robyn Conley, the book doctor, says, Structure
and format, pump up the heart rate, do some mps and tucks here and there and
market it right (she supplies the how-to) and there should be no problems.
It appears she would be happy if you learned how to doctor your own creations,
but if not, shes still around.
